Dinner Table Bread

Exodus 25:30 “ Place the Bread of the Presence on the table to remain before me at all times”

“Bread” is mentioned throughout scriptures holding different meanings. Bread is seen as sustenance or provision for needs ( Matt 6:11), bread as spiritual food ( Deut 8:3)( Matt 4:4), bread as a sacrifice ( Matt 26:26) and in this case, bread as a reminder (Ex 25:30).

One thing about the Bible is that everything is connected, old and New Testament. Phrases or words usually hold connotations that could help to define an entire sentence.

In seeing ”bread” mentioned in Ex 25:30, I thought of one Person who was said to be the “Bread of life” (John 6:35), who carries different functionalities and that was Jesus.

Jesus’s sacrifice was being foretold before it even came into being. But more importantly is the significance of His sacrifice that would transcend to all mankind who decided to believe in Christ. God would no longer see them through the lens of their sins, but He would see them through the sacrifice of His Son.

The layout for constructing a table to place within the tabernacle was given in verse 23-29 of chapter 25 in Exodus and the table, which usually signifies sharing or communing, was a prophecy of the “breaking of bread” that would take place further down in Matthew 26:26. The table was a prophecy of all who would come and join in the family of God because of the centerpiece “bread” that was broken for us but also joined us all in Him.

Romans 8:16-17

“ The spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit; that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint- heirs with Christ, if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together”
